Photography and PhotoNaturals
This page provides an overview of the role of participating photographers. Remember, Photographers are "Participants" too so please read those pages as well. Things have changed somewhat as of 2009 so you should read everything carefully. I am pursuing mainly the small group outing format in which about 12 people, including me and a couple other photographers go on a trip to one or a few locations in a day. Photographers shoot everything that happens that day, including travel, arrivals, and departures. The photos eventually get mixed together into a continuous stream of images that tells the story of the day. The photographers help drive and facilitate the group trip.What is Different about being a PhotoNaturals Photographer?
✓ You will also be nude and are likely to appear in some of the photos.✓ You shoot as part of a team covering group activities.
✓ You are not really paid for this, just the small excursion honorarium.
✓ You must allow me to copy ALL your raw images at the end of the day.
✓ You sign over the copyright in the images you shoot (but you do retain some rights).
DETAILS - For Current and Potential Photographers
If you are interested in participating specifically as a photographer at PhotoNaturals outings please read this page carefully even if you have participated before. It is an unusual relationship that you need to fully understand to make sure it is really for you.❂ PHOTOGRAPHERS ARE CONTRACTUALLY ALSO PARTICIPANTS
Photographers complete the same agreement as other participants. This is because sometimes the photographers appear in some photos and sometimes the on-camera participants end up shooting some photos. Sometimes a camera will be handed around and we lose track of who shoots what. Some people play both roles. Normally everyone is nude so that there is not such a great separation between photographer and subject and so that we never get a mix of clothed and nude people in any of the images.
❂ PHOTOGRAPHERS WORK AS A MULTI-CAMERA TEAM
Photographers shoot to serve the project, to document the experience of the day as vividly as possible. The photographers should see themselves as a team, keeping an eye on what others are shooting and filling in alternate angles on the events that transpire. There will little "modeling" in the usual sense. You need to be able to take direction as well as have your own initiative. You are not shooting personal fine art nudes, though the occasional opportunity may present itself. Your creativity in capturing interesting moments spontaneously and from interesting perspectives is important.
❂ REASONS FOR PARTICIPATING
Your main incentive for participating should be to have fun doing what you love. You will be working hard all day, shooting almost non-stop; you really need an energy and love for this kind of project. There is not much of a payment at the end of the day. You should be able to recognize that this is an opportunity that might not normally happen to you: shooting a group of nudes in an unusual situation. You may end up with some stunning portfolio images.
❂ PHOTOS BELONG TO THE PROJECT
You will give me your CF cards at the end of the day and I will copy everything, then hand back the cards (but not deleted). Your participation agreement states that the copyright ownership will reside with the PhotoNaturals project. You are, however, granted the right to exhibit the photos for self promotion or artistic display provided you do not derive income directly from them.
❂ PHOTOGRAPHER SELECTION
I select the photographers to participate on a given day. I have several people I can call upon now that have come out a few times and I know are reliable, help with carpooling, and providing other support. However, I am looking for a few new photographers so if you are interested, let me know. One way is to apply to just participate and mention your photographic experience. You would then come to the first outing primarily to participate but would at some point do some photography. At a later date, once I have seen your images and have some impression of you and other things you can contribute, I will decide if I can include you. Do not be intimidated; you do not need a lot of experience; students are welcome. I am particularily interested in more women photographers.
You can decide if you want your real name mentioned on the website or if you want to use a nickname instead.
